Shockwave therapy has been used for treatment of musculoskeletal conditions since the early 1990’s.  Originating from a urology procedure called Lithotripsy (used to treat kidney stones), it is a safe and non-invasive therapy.

Increasing evidence supports the use of shockwave therapy in the treatment of tendinopathy and plantar fasciitis in particular, though it is used for other pathologies.  There is good research to show benefits from using ESWT on notoriously difficult to heal problems such as:

ecsw·         achilles tendinopathy

·         plantar fasciitis.

·         gluteal and hamstring tendinopathy

·         patella tendinopathy

·         tennis elbow

·         shoulder tendinopathy

Evidence suggests that up to 80% of patients with appropriate injuries will improve with shockwave therapy.

What is involved?

Radial shockwaves are transmitted to the site of injury via a hand piece held by the Podiatrist or Physiotherapist.  Treatment over the area of injury may cause some initial discomfort.  It is not uncommon for patients to develop numbness or heaviness in this area at the time of treatment.

Each treatment will take a duration of approximately 10 minutes, and 2-3000 pulsed shockwaves will be administered to the site.

Patients typically need 3-5 treatments though improvement can be achieved after a single treatment.

Is a referral needed?

No referral is necessary but you will need an initial assessment with our podiatrist Rick Osler to see if shock wave therapy is suitable for you given your history, symptoms, previous treatment and and imaging that has been completed.

Contra-indications

  • inflammatory conditions
  • pregnancy
  • bleeding or clotting disorder
  • warfarin therapy
  • cancer

Cost & Bookings

The shockwave therapy itself does not qualify for a health insurance rebate, however your consultation with the providing therapist does. The total cost of each shockwave therapy session is $90, with the rebate applying to the practitioner’s consultation component of that fee.

For the initial period we are taking bookings for foot and ankle conditions, but hope to be able to expand into other areas very soon.

Bookings can be made by calling our East Bentleigh clinic on 9570 8538.
